Why the Next Generation is Rejecting Artificial Intelligence

The narrative about artificial intelligence and youth is often monolithic. We hear that kids are digital natives, poised to inherit and master a world run by algorithms. But when you move beyond the corporate press releases and actually talk to young people, a far more complex and human story emerges. It’s not just a story of adoption; it’s a story of visceral resistance.

For many children and teenagers, AI is not a liberating tool but a source of deep anxiety and intellectual insult. The Silicon Valley hype cycle often overlooks this: the human element that craves authenticity and finds the artificial to be a poor, and sometimes disturbing, substitute.

This sentiment is captured perfectly by 9-year-old Marian Agnew from Oklahoma, who told WIRED, “I think that [AI] should stand for ‘artificial idiot.'”

This isn’t a precocious one-liner; it’s an insight born from experience. Young people are often on the front lines of encountering AI’s early, often clumsy, mistakes. Maggie McPherson, 14, recalled a time an AI summary claimed there were whales in Lake Superior.

“It came from a fake information website,” she said, cutting through the myth of AI infallible knowledge. For students like her, these errors highlight a fundamental truth: AI doesn’t learn the way a human does. It hallucinates.

The fear isn’t just about bad facts on a science project; it’s about the erosion of consequence. Twelve-year-old Arabella Hippisley Coxe expressed a remarkably clear vision of the high-stakes future:

“In the future it could be bad because maybe people would use AI to become doctors, and then we would have the wrong doctor, and we could die.”

She sees the real-world impact of replacing human expertise with algorithmic convenience.

AI Dumbing Us Down

For educators and students, AI presents a different kind of threat. Jasper Owens, 16, described how his classmates use ChatGPT as “their brains.” In an English class assignment on the novel Night, he said, classmates simply copy-pasted questions into the AI and then copy-pasted the responses back to the teacher. This shortcutting of critical thought concerns not just educators like Zoe Katz, who believes AI is decreasing intelligence, but the students themselves.

Selene Kelley, 17, from Virginia, pointed out a collective regression.

“It continuously is dumbing down just the whole community within school,” she said. At her school, a student group put up a St. Patrick’s Day display that was instantly recognizable as “just pure AI slop.”

For art kids, seeing low-effort, synthetic work presented in place of human effort was “genuinely disgusting.”

The core issue isn’t just cheating; it’s the devaluing of the human effort and creativity that kids genuinely enjoy.

Nine-year-old Marian Agnew articulated this with simple clarity: “AI is used to come up with ideas. It’s not that hard. People can do that. It’s part of the fun.”

The Climate Anxiety Connection

The kids of Generation Alpha and Gen Z are not just concerned with their homework. They are profoundly aware of the challenges facing the planet, particularly climate change. When AI companies talk about building “goodwill,” they must confront that their technology’s footprint is a major concern.

Danielle Kelley, a mother in Virginia, noted that the news of a Google data center being built nearby prompted deep worry in her daughter and friends about the impact on their local water supply. This is not an abstract fear. Research indicates a single data center can consume significant amounts of power and water for cooling, which, in areas facing resource scarcity, creates immediate real-world conflict.

Jasper Owens, connecting the environmental impact back to the social consequences, argued that this downside should be obvious. To use AI without considering its consumption of power and water, he says, “feels like they’re failing an open-book test with the answers being screamed at them.”

The Uncanny Valley of AI Slop

The visual world of AI also evokes strong, often negative, reactions. This is a visual language that feels inherently artificial—the uncanny valley where something almost looks human but fails spectacularly.

Zoe Katz described an AI video company visiting her school. The speaker tried to demonstrate “AI-assisted cinematography,” but the students were “just sitting there dying of laughter.” The resulting output was so disconnected from real humor or skill that the school decided against inviting the speaker back.

Younger children feel this strongly. Marian Agnew, whose family was disturbed by the “uncanny quality” of AI images, pointed to weird anomalies: “They make the cats have weird big eyes… the eyes are popping out of their heads almost. And then the mouth is just very, very non-cat-like.” For a 12-year-old, this isn’t innovation; it’s “gross” and “creepy.”

I Never Know What’s Real and What’s Fake

Perhaps the most human response of all is the fear of deception. We crave connection, and deepfakes create a barrier to genuine interaction.

David Haim, 13, summed up the anxiety: “When I’m on TikTok, I never know what’s real and what’s fake.”

This leads to a pervasive skepticism that can be exhausting. Kito Dorsla, 14, shared how he almost fell for a video showing Stephen Curry saying he was going to resign from the NBA. He initially thought it was funny, but then he realized the deception.

“It’s not as funny,” he said. “I feel like I was cheated out of something that didn’t really happen.”

This is the human consequence: a feeling of being manipulated, not amused.

The AI “craze” often fails to account for the kids who aren’t just “adapting.” These are not passive consumers; they are acute observers of the world around them. And many of them have decided that what they see is “slop,” “creepy,” and, most damningly, “stupid.” They value the hard-won skills, the unique perspective, and the undeniable authenticity that only other humans can provide.
