The Health & Life Science Exchange (HELIX) in New Brunswick has officially reached a monumental milestone in its mission to restore New Jersey to the pinnacle of global scientific discovery. Portal Innovations, a premier national life sciences venture development engine, has opened the doors to the New Jersey Innovation Hub (NJIH), Powered by Portal.
Launching with an impressive cohort of 16 founding member companies, the nearly 30,000-square-foot facility represents the largest pre-launch member commitment in Portal Innovations’ nationwide network. The hub, located in the H-1 tower of the HELIX district, is designed to serve as a high-powered launchpad where early-stage biotechnology, medical technology, and healthcare startups can seamlessly bridge the gap between scientific breakthrough and commercial scale.
A Premier Ecosystem for Science-Driven Startups

The NJIH offers a curated environment that co-locates early-stage companies alongside academic giants, industry leaders, and venture capitalists. Occupying three floors within the first HELIX building, the hub features:
- World-Class Lab Facilities: Over 30,000 square feet of modern wet and dry lab benches, specialized tissue culture hoods, Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) environments, and chemical fume hoods.
- Top-tier Instrumentation: Members gain shared access to more than $2 million of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
- Collaborative Working Spaces: Over 80 dedicated desks, modern conference rooms, and professional office areas designed to foster collaboration.
- Venture Capital & Guidance: Strategic resources under Portal’s “Crafted Capital” model, providing direct access to seed funding, specialized expertise, and a global network of investors.
Among the 16 founding companies leading the charge are promising startups such as Guidant Therapeutics (developing targeted cancer immunotherapies), DrRx.ai (providing AI-driven real-time patient medication visibility), and Thrive Genetics (utilizing genomics to improve addiction treatment).
Strategic Leadership and Heavyweight Partners
To guide the hub’s growth, Portal Innovations recently appointed industry veteran Sangeetha Ramsagar as Executive Director of the NJIH. Ramsagar brings over 20 years of experience across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology commercialization, and venture strategy to lead member recruitment and foster regional partnerships.
The project’s realization rests on a collaborative public-private coalition that includes the State of New Jersey, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), Middlesex County, Rutgers University, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, and the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO).
A major catalyst for the facility’s collaborative energy is the newly established Johnson & Johnson Exchange. Securing the naming rights to the hub’s central convening space, J&J will sponsor targeted innovation programs and annual networking events. Additionally, life sciences trade organization BioNJ has joined as a foundational member, integrating its extensive advocacy and resource network directly into the New Brunswick facility.
Reimagining New Jersey’s Scientific Legacy
Positioned directly across from the New Brunswick train station and close to premier research institutions like Rutgers, Princeton, and NJIT, the HELIX innovation district will span 1.6 million square feet upon completion. With Nokia Bell Labs slated to occupy the upcoming H-2 tower, the district is rapidly cementing New Jersey’s reputation as a top-tier global hub for bioscience.
